We have two salmon seasons in Oregon, the spring run, and the fall run.

Spring Chinook

I fish the Columbia, Willamette, and Santiam Rivers for Spring Chinook. Spring Chinook start showing in the Columbia and Willamette Rivers in the Portland area in mid March. The best fishing usually is late March through Mid May. The predicted run for 2010 on the Columbia River is the largest run since 1938, so it should be good fishing. On the Santiam, Spring Chinook can be caught through June.

Fall Chinook

I start fishing for Fall Chinook the beginning of August at the mouth of the Columbia River in Astoria and will fish here through September. This is an awesome fishery with a mixed bag of Coho (silvers) and Chinook (kings). 2009 was a fantastic run and 2010 promises to be just as good if not better. In October I move down the coast to some of the other bays such as Tillamook, Newport and Florence to finish the fall run. These bays will fish well into November, with Chinook being the target species.
