Spring Salmon
The Spring Salmon
run begins in April on the Willamette River near Portland. I
will fish here until the fish begin to migrate upstream, usually
the beginning of May, then I will follow them to their
tributaries, the Santiam, (near Salem) McKenzie, and Middle Fork
Willamette Rivers (near Eugene). I will fish for spring Salmon
here through June. Peak time for spring Salmon is April-Mid
June. Spring Salmon average 15-25 pounds.
Trip description:
Spring salmon trips are very popular for anglers wanting to
tangle with Oregon’s most popular game fish, the Chinook or King
Salmon.
Trolling and mooching are the most popular and effective methods of
catching both Chinook and Coho Salmon.
These trips take place in
some of the most scenic locations available on the Oregon Coast.
This is the best time of year to be at the coast as well, with the
weather being as nice as it gets, cool mornings and warm afternoons.
Combine that with ocean fresh Salmon and you have a combination
that’s hard to beat The Spring Chinook, or king, will average around
20-35 pounds with fish in the 40 pound range being very common.
The
Coho, or silver Salmon, average between 8 and 12 pounds. They are
very acrobatic fish and frequent jumps are common when fighting
these feisty fish.
When the Coho are in, I like to find schools and
throw spinners to them, they are very aggressive toward the spinners
and very fun to catch this way.
